What to do when overwhelmed

December 1, 2015

Do nothing for a moment.

Close your eyes.

Tell yourself, “I am okay in this moment” repeatedly, to stop the obsessive thoughts, and let those words really soothe you.

Do not make any decisions right then.

Take a walk, preferably outside, if even for a few minutes.

“Wait”, you say, “I can’t do that!  People are staring at me, depending on me, my list is a mile long, I have a deadline!  I can’t just do nothing!”

I hear you.  Close your eyes, dear one, breathe, tell yourself you are okay, all will be okay.  Please do this for 10 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute if that is all you can spare.  Longer if possible.

Taking this deliberate pause will help you arrive at what is the next right thing to do; you can only do one thing at a time, remember, you will never do all those things overwhelming you all at one time, it’s not possible, so take that pressure off yourself.

Repeat this pause frequently, add three deep breaths each time, and the overwhelm will subside.

Repeat this pause even when you’re not overwhelmed as it will help you stay that way.
